Opium pipes being burned in Hawaii, 1920. Alcohol wasn’t the only problem America had. Prior to 1926, most of the drugs were legal. Massive amounts of Heroin begin to be smuggled into the United States by people like Arnold Rothstein, Lucky Luciano and others. This pattern would continue for the next 50 years in larger and larger degrees. The creation of Morphine from opium would further the addictions of many in the post Civil War era. In many parts of the city in the 1870’s and onward, one could smoke opium in areas such as Mott Street, Pell Street, Baxter Street, Doyers Street and other places. Gambling houses dotted the landscape offering varying levels of games. Many saloons were trafficked by prostitutes, pickpockets and con men of all sorts. The Bowery, Lower East Side and the Tenderloin later, were dangerous places to travel where for a price almost any indulgence could be purchased. White slavery was a real thing, people were sometimes “Shanghaied” usually drugged and sold to a ship’s captain to work on the ship. People would sometimes be given “Knock out drops” in saloons, and later robbed and left somewhere or killed even. New York was a lawless place for decades, especially the Lower East Side area.
